## The Injury Wave We See Every August — And How Houston Parents Can Prevent It

Every year in late July and early August, **Apex Chiropractic** starts seeing a specific patient: a Houston-area middle- or high-schooler with new neck pain, upper back tightness, or "just weird" shoulder aches. Nine times out of ten, the culprit is the backpack they just started carrying again.

This one's worth reading before the first day of school, not after.

### Why Backpacks Cause More Damage Than Parents Realize

A growing spine is still forming its curves through the teenage years. When a child regularly carries a backpack that's more than **10–15% of their body weight**, or wears it slung on one shoulder, the spine adapts to the load — usually by rounding forward and shifting to one side. Repeat this five days a week for a school year and you get:

- Forward head posture that outlasts the school year
- Chronic upper-trap tension and headaches
- Uneven shoulder height that parents often mistake for scoliosis
- Lower back pain in kids who "shouldn't have back pain yet"

### The Houston-Specific Problem

Most Houston-area schools mean long walks across large campuses, plus the added weight of a laptop and a water bottle (necessary in this heat). We're routinely seeing 7th graders carrying 18–22 lbs on a 90-lb frame. That's roughly the equivalent of an adult male hauling a 40-lb bag every day, on one shoulder.

### What to Look For at Home

- One shoulder visibly higher than the other
- Complaints of neck or upper back "tightness" after school
- New headaches, especially in the afternoon
- Slouching that doesn't correct when you remind them
- Numbness or tingling in the arms after wearing the pack

Any of these warrant an evaluation — not because they're emergencies, but because they're dramatically easier to fix now than after a full semester of reinforcement.

### 4 Rules Dr. Wafer Gives Houston Parents

1. **Weight cap:** No more than 10% of body weight for elementary, 15% for middle/high school.
2. **Both straps, always.** Non-negotiable. A single strap doubles the asymmetric load on the spine.
3. **Hip belt or waist strap** if the school allows it — it transfers load off the shoulders.
4. **Load positioning:** Heaviest items closest to the spine, not the outer flap.

### Free 15-Minute Backpack + Posture Screen

Through the back-to-school window, Apex Chiropractic in Houston is offering a quick posture-and-load screen for local students. If we spot early asymmetry, we can usually correct it in a handful of visits — before it becomes a habit your child carries into adulthood.

Book a screen for your student and get ahead of it.
