After a Bad Chiropractic Experience: How NUCCA Rebuilds Trust
Dr. Kathy Doyle
DC, NUCCA Chiropractor at Doyle Chiropractic
"I Was Actually Injured by a Chiropractor"
This sentence appears, in some form, repeatedly in Doyle Chiropractic's patient stories. It's one of the harder realities of the chiropractic field: forceful, high-velocity manipulations — particularly of the neck — can cause real harm.
For patients who have been injured, the path forward is complicated. They often need chiropractic care more than ever, but the idea of being cracked again is unthinkable. NUCCA exists, in part, for them.
What Makes NUCCA Mechanically Different
Traditional cervical manipulation:
- High-velocity, low-amplitude thrust
- Rotation and extension of the neck
- Audible cavitation ("crack")
- Force applied through the practitioner's body weight
NUCCA correction:
- Low-velocity, low-amplitude precision contact
- Patient lies on their side, head and neck supported throughout
- No rotation, no extension, no twisting
- Force calculated to the patient's specific misalignment vector
- Most patients report feeling almost nothing
The risk profile of these two approaches is not comparable. NUCCA has been practiced for decades with an exceptional safety record, particularly in the populations most concerned about injury.
The Trust Recovery Process
- The first visit is a conversation, not an adjustment. Patients describe their history, fears, and goals.
- The exam is non-manipulative. Postural analysis, gait observation, and X-rays establish what's actually misaligned.
- The correction is demonstrated first. Patients see and feel the contact pressure on their hand before it's applied to their neck.
- Post-correction reassurance. Imaging verifies the change — patients aren't asked to "trust the process," they're shown it.
Repairing the Damage
Many patients who come to Doyle Chiropractic after a previous injury have layered problems: the original misalignment that drove them to chiropractic, plus the secondary damage from whatever forceful adjustment hurt them.
One patient described it simply: Dr. Doyle was able to fix the damage and help her gain her trust back.
If You've Been Injured Before
If a previous chiropractic experience hurt you and you've been afraid to try again, a NUCCA consultation costs nothing but a conversation.
