Kids, Camps, and Concussions: A Missoula Summer Guide to Recognizing and Recovering from Subtle Head Injuries

Concussions don't always look like concussions
Most pediatric concussions we see at Primal Practice never involved a hospital visit. There was a fall at camp, a wipeout on a bike, a tumble at a swimming hole — and a few days later the child is "different." Sleep changes, irritability, headaches, light sensitivity, motion sickness, drop in appetite, regression in behavior.
Subtle signs Missoula parents should not ignore
- Increased emotional reactivity or new bedtime struggles
- Headaches, neck stiffness, or "weird" balance
- Trouble focusing, reading, or tolerating screens
- Nausea in the car when they were previously fine
- Light or sound sensitivity that wasn't there a week ago
How nervous-system chiropractic supports concussion recovery
Concussion is fundamentally a brain and brainstem event. Gentle upper cervical adjustments, cranial sacral work, and autonomic support help the system come out of a sympathetic-dominant pattern so the brain can actually heal. We work alongside primary care and, when appropriate, vision and vestibular therapists.
