The Surprising Lesson I Learned From My Son's Morning Routine

Had a moment with my younger son, Ben, driving to school the other day.
He was late.
I couldn't relate to this. I was never like this…I guess because I went to an all boys high school.
I really didn't care how I looked, because it was all guys there. So I spent no time getting ready.
Plus, at my high school they put the fear of God into you that you REALLY didn't want to be late. It was, after all, a Catholic high school.
But my son has to primp and preen for what seems like an hour every day.
He goes to Eastside high, but this year from there he takes a bus to the Bonds Career Center to take some classes. He's taking some electrician classes, which he really likes.
That means he's got to get to the bus before the bus pulls out. Well, he messed around long enough the other day so that when we pulled into the Eastside parking lot…there goes his bus. WITHOUT him on it.
And I was pissed…and I let him know how pissed I was.
But what I didn't let him know, and what I will let him know tonight is that it wasn't so much that I was pissed because I had to drive an extra probably 40 minutes, if not an hour, and it made me late to the office.
It wasn't really that.
What really got to me was that it is simply disrespectful of him to not manage his own time, which had an impact on me managing my time.
So we're gonna have a conversation, and he'll fix it. I mean, he's a smart kid.
But it leads me to a question for you…
Where are you disrespecting other people's time? Are you on time for everything that you have to have scheduled in your day?
Because if you're not, I think that's a biggie.
A coach of mine said many years ago that it's not a time management issue. It is a SELF MANAGEMENT issue.
We need to manage ourselves. And part of that is managing time.
I really try and be a stickler and be on time for everything that I go to. Am I always on time? No… unfortunately stuff comes up…but I do my best.
So this is a message for ME. Make sure I manage myself and my time and try to be on time for everything. Or at least do the best I can.
And it's also a message for you…make sure you manage YOUR self and YOUR time.
And even more importantly, honor OTHER people's time, especially if they're depending on you and waiting on you.
Here endeth the lesson!
