How You're Hurting Your Posture & What You Can Do About It
Your posture matters and it's not just about how you look. Poor posture puts stress on your body, makes your muscles feel sore and tense, and may send your spine and the rest of your body out of alignment. Unfortunately, the modern world isn't kind to our posture — and you may be unknowingly hurting your posture in your day-to-day life.
Why Poor Posture Matters
Your spine holds up your body and protects your spinal cord, which is how your brain and the rest of your body send messages to each other. Slouching or rounded shoulders puts stress on your spine, causing muscle soreness, tension, and headaches. It can also throw your spine out of alignment, making it harder for signals between your brain and body to travel effectively.
When your spine is out of alignment, your body needs to work harder. Slouching forward reduces lung capacity and hurts energy levels. Tense muscles lead to headaches that make it harder to concentrate. Body aches make it harder to sleep — and that harms so many aspects of your life.
Habits That Could Be Hurting Your Posture
1. "Tech Neck"
This modern phenomenon refers to tilting your head forward and down to look at a screen. It puts pressure on your spine and can alter your neck's natural curve. Keep screens at eye level instead of looking down.
2. Sitting Too Much
Sitting for long periods causes muscle fatigue and puts pressure on your lower back. It can also reduce blood flow to your muscles. Take frequent breaks to stand, stretch, or walk around.
3. How You Sleep
Sleeping on your stomach puts a lot of pressure on your lower back and can negatively affect the curve of your spine. Try sleeping on your back or side instead and use pillows to keep your spine in proper alignment.
4. Carrying Too Much
Carrying a heavy bag on one shoulder tilts your body to one side, causing alignment issues, pain, and muscle imbalance. Only carry what you need, switch shoulders frequently, or use a properly-fitted backpack.
5. The Wrong Footwear
Shoes without proper support can hurt your posture and strain your spine. High heels shift your weight forward, causing imbalance. Wear supportive footwear whenever possible — and in some cases, custom orthotics may be recommended to correct imbalances.
