What to Know Before Seeing a Chiropractor
Before seeing a chiropractor for the first time, you might have a lot of questions. Chiropractors practice holistic care — they look at your entire body and how various parts and systems interact when treating a health concern. A good chiropractor will be happy to answer whatever questions you have and will fully explain all possible treatment options.
1. What is the goal of this treatment?
Each chiropractic treatment plan will be personalized and unique. When you first meet with a chiropractor, they'll want to know as much about your situation as possible — the extent of your issue, your lifestyle, and your health history. That's because they want to treat you as a whole person, not just a symptom.
Chiropractors look to treat root causes rather than just mask symptoms. The goal of a treatment plan may go further than "stop this body part from hurting" — your chiropractor should outline the ultimate goal and how progress will be measured.
2. What is the length of this treatment plan?
You want to know how many appointments you will need and for how long. This helps you know what to expect in terms of commitment and budget.
In most cases, a chiropractor will recommend several sessions close together at the beginning to reduce pain and restore range of motion. As you start seeing positive changes, the frequency of appointments will likely reduce to a maintenance schedule.
3. Do you have any recommendations for my overall health?
Chiropractors do more than just treat symptoms. They may recommend at-home stretches or exercises to strengthen the body, posture adjustments (improving your workspace, supportive shoes, how you carry your bag), or dietary changes. Some offer nutritional counseling to help achieve these goals.
4. Will you be using any other therapies in my treatment?
Many chiropractors recommend additional therapies — diagnostic imaging, corrective exercises (to eliminate muscle imbalances and improve movement patterns), physiotherapy (to improve strength, range of motion, and flexibility), or custom orthotics to help realign your feet and better support your body.
5. Is there anything else I should be aware of?
This open-ended question lets your chiropractor highlight aspects of your treatment that are unique to you. If you have any questions about seeing a chiropractor, please reach out — we're here to help.
