Summer in the Loop: Beating Chicago Heat, Humidity & Back Pain
Published June 2026 · Proper Balance Medical, 60 W Randolph St, Chicago IL 60607
June in Chicago means longer days along the Riverwalk, weekend runs on the Lakefront Trail, and a full return to outdoor sport for our patients across the West Loop, Fulton Market, and the Gold Coast. It also means humidity spikes, sudden training-load jumps, and the seasonal wave of back, neck, shoulder, and knee complaints we see every summer at Proper Balance Medical.
Why Chicago summers spike musculoskeletal pain
- Dehydration + disc pressure. Spinal discs are ~80% water. Two hot, under-hydrated days in a row raise reported low back pain intensity in field studies. Add commuter walking on hot pavement and it compounds fast.
- Training-load jumps. Patients who trained indoors all winter suddenly log 25–40 mile weeks on the Lakefront. Achilles, patellar tendon, and IT band irritation follow within 3–4 weeks.
- A/C + posture. Cold offices in the Loop tighten upper trapezius and levator scapulae. We see a June bump in "text-neck" style tension headaches every year.
What we are treating most this month
At our Randolph Street clinic, June has been dominated by:
- Runner's knee & Achilles tendinopathy — shockwave therapy has been our workhorse.
- Lower back flare-ups after weekend yard work — same-day PulStar adjustments plus targeted physical therapy.
- Tension headaches from A/C-heavy offices — upper cervical work, trigger point release, and posture reset.
- Frozen shoulder & rotator cuff pain — combining chiropractic care with PRF injections when appropriate.
The Proper Balance approach — measured, not guessed
Every care plan at Proper Balance Medical starts the same way: a thorough exam, digital motion X-rays when indicated, and a written baseline. Then we combine the modalities that actually move the needle for your specific issue — chiropractic adjustments (manual and PulStar), physical therapy, medical massage, shockwave therapy, PRF (platelet-rich fibrin) injections, and red light therapy. We track your progress against your baseline, not against a template.
3 things to do this month if you live or work downtown
- Hydrate before you feel thirsty. Half your bodyweight in ounces, minimum, on 85°+ days.
- Add 10%, not 40%. Whatever your weekly run/bike/lift volume was in May, cap June at +10%.
- Get checked before the July 4th weekend. A short tune-up prevents the "I bent over on Saturday and couldn't stand up Sunday" call we take every holiday.
